The Chapel

“I’m not going back to that grave,” Isaac said. “I feel like I’ve done the devil’s work today, and I’m never doing that again. I’m sorry, John, but I feel terrible for what we have done here.”

“I do, too,” John said. “We all do. I feel unclean, and I shall pray hard for forgiveness, but remember, this is all Margaret’s doing, and if it is indeed the work of the devil, then it is Margaret herself who is the devil.”

“Even she didn’t dig up the grave of a young boy.” Isaac’s face was contorted as though he was in great pain.

“She wouldn’t have hesitated if it suited her to do so, and you know it,” John replied.

“So, what else might there be?” Edward asked. “I’m sorry, John, but I’m with Isaac. I’m not digging up any more graves.”

“I’m not asking you to. There’s a chapel built onto the side of the house, and I was thinking there might be a memorial to the child in there. If there is, it would have made a perfect hiding place.”

“You go,” Isaac said. “I’m not feeling too good to be truthful. I’ll wait here and keep watch.”

John placed his hand on his friend’s shoulder. “You do look a little pale,” he said. “Take a rest and I’ll be right back.”

Catherine stayed with Isaac, while John, Edward, and Stephen ran back to the house.

“There it is.” John pointed at the small chapel that had been added to the side of the house.

Without another word, Edward tried the heavy oak doors, but they were locked. John tried the windows, but all the ones at the front were shut tight as well.

“Here,” Stephen shouted.

A small window on the side of the chapel, barely big enough for a person to crawl through, was cracked open. Stephen pulled hard, and it opened all the way out.

“We can get in here,” he said triumphantly.

“Wait here,” John said. “There’s no need for us all to go in. If anything is there, I will find it. Help me up.”

Stephen and Edward held their hands so John could stand on them and squeeze his way inside the window.

Once inside, John waited a moment for his eyes to adjust to the darkness. He peered around, scratching at his chin at the unexpected sight before him.

The room was long and narrow. It had a large fireplace on the inside wall that had to be connected to a fireplace inside the house itself. A long table with several chairs was the only furniture in the room, and a large candle lantern hovered above the table.

The far side from where John stood had a small balcony, and beneath that was a doorway that must lead into the house.

This isn’t a chapel: it’s the great hall! It looks like a chapel from the outside, but from the inside there is no doubt.

John backed away to the window and returned from whence he had come.

“It’s not a chapel,” he declared to the surprised faces waiting outside. “It looks like one from out here, but it’s the great hall.
